Our family has been ranching in Hobble Creek Canyon since 1901. Over the last 30 years or so, Judy and I have found that the greatest joy of this spectacularly beautiful place and these marvelous animals is in sharing them. We hope you'll come see, experience, and feel why we say, "The Mountains are Calling."
Come to our ranch in Hobble Creek Canyon where I will introduce you to the horse you'll be riding. I will explain the equipment we use, help you get the saddle fitted to your needs, and demonstrate how to ride the horse and use the equipment. After a short horseback riding lesson in the corral, we will venture out onto the ranch for your trail ride. I will tailor the horseback ride to your experience and comfort level; from a calm ride with me leading your horse through the meadow, to adventurous mountain trail rides.
Our "standard" rides, including orientation, lesson, and ride, last either one or two hours, but if you're craving more, we can customize a horse riding experience just for you.
Last summer we caught the attention of Explore Utah Valley. They came to the ranch, took some gorgeous pictures, and wrote a nice article about hour horseback riding experience. Check it out!
This is true backcountry camping, with a comfortable twist. Our ranch is about an hour from Salt Lake and just minutes to BYU in Provo. The tent is about a mile hike from the parking area (or choose one of our shuttle options). Because we have just a few campsites spread over more than 100 acres, you will have peace and privacy unmatched in traditional campgrounds.
The tent is large (216 square feet) and features the most comfortable bed we could find (it's more comfortable than our bed at home!) There's a picnic table, some comfy chairs, and a propane fire ring. Open fires (and flames of any kind other than in the fire ring or the provided propane stove) are strictly prohibited. Escape to private luxury (for camping) and immerse yourself in nature.
Over the last 30 years I have shared my love of backcountry horseback riding with countless friends and many strangers who have become friends. I have led rides in the mountains of Utah's Wasatch Range, the slickrock deserts of the San Rafael Swell, and Wyoming's Teton Wilderness. Whether you are an experienced equestrian or city slicker

Over the next few weeks we'll be featuring each of the horses on the ranch. We have kind of an eclectic herd. The mares we ride (Belle, Bunny, and Bitsy) were bred for the sport of cutting. They're on the small side, but athletic, smart, and handy. Beau is a Mustang from the Cedar Mountain Herd Management Area here in Utah. He's HUGE for a mustang, and is able to carry a bigger load than the girls. We joke that Jet must have gotten his name because he is jet propelled -- air goes in the front and out the back. ;) The babies -- Goose and India -- were born in 2021 and won't be ready to ride for a few years, but they're a joy to have on the ranch. At over 30 years of age, Jasmine is retired from trail rides. Her job is now limited to carrying the grandkids a few laps around the corral.
We think you'll enjoy getting to know them.

Hobble Creek Outfitters operates on a ranch at the north end of the Left Hand Fork of Hobble Creek Canyon in Utah County, Utah. Our family started ranching at the end of the canyon in 1901. Originally homesteaded by Edwin Whiting My great-great-grandfather and his two sons acquired the ranch intending to raise sheep. When they got to the train depot, the train from Denver carried only cattle. Today, my uncle and cousin continue to raise the descendants of those same cattle.
On our side of the road, we raise horses, kids, and spirits. The trails on our ranch elevate the rider, not only from to the 6700 feet above sea level, but to a perspective of the world and life that reminds us how much God must love His children to have created such a spectacular world for us to enjoy and care for. Come see. Come experience. Come Feel. The Mountains are Calling.

Listing on Airbnb has some advantages (like insurance protection for you and for us) but also some limitations. Their platform doesn't have quite as much flexibility as we do. So, if you don't see what you're looking for on the Airbnb calendar, don't hesitate to reach out. We'll do our best to accommodate your need for the outdoors.
